The Domaine consists of 13ha of vines in 11 plots of land spread around the villages of Murviel les Montpellier, St Georges d’Orques and Pignan. The vines are on a sloping plots at between 80 and 150m above sea level and the Mediterranean can be seen twinkling on the horizon from our Estate. The soils of our vineyards were created 170 million years ago in the Jurassic period, specifically in an era called Aalenien, and are made up of layers of Jurassic limestone and calcite.
We spend a great deal of time looking after our vines in a dry and windy Mediterranean climate. We use no systemic chemicals in the vineyard, either on the soil or on the vines. For several years we have ceased to plough the inter-vine rows, allowing the natural flora and fauna to flourish and also to increase the micro-bacteria in the soil. We create our own compost which is made from dried grape skins, horse manure and straw and is spread on 1/3 of the vineyard each year.
Our main red grape varieties are Syrah, Grenache Noir, and Mourvèdre. Our white varieties are Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Roussanne. To change from the traditional varieties found in the Languedoc we have top-grafted small quantities of Sangiovese, Petit Verdot and Malbec which produced their first grapes in 2014. Our vines are aged between 10 and 40 years.
